At its quarter-century anniversary, the El Paso County Stand Down baton has been handed over to new leadership, with the pledge that the event that helps homeless military veterans prepare for winter and obtain helpful information like housing will continue for years to come.

The annual event that began 25 years ago as part of a national movement to provide homeless military veterans rest and recovery from their daily struggles for the first time will be presented by Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center, the community’s only private nonprofit that provides direct services to veterans.
