The report also says there are many issues that can lead to suicide. Ken Curtner, the lead Behavioral Health clinician for Next Chapter says many veterans he sees struggle with adapting to civilian life, causing them to be suicidal. Curter told me when a veteran leaves the military, they lose what they have identified as, for sometimes years. Ken Curtner – Lead Behavioral Health Clinician, Next Chapter: It’s very difficult to transition from military life to civilian. When you’re in the military you have a distinct identity of soldier, airman, and whatever other services you may have served in. You own that title, that’s who you are. He said the key to preventing suicide is to guide veterans through transitioning and give them a new identity. Next Chapter helps with updating resumes, doing mock interviews and helping them get a job.
