11 news at 5:30. A new study says veteran suicide is on the rise. Here in colorado springs, there are resources to help veterans and their families with mental health and other issues. One thing the organization hopes to do, is to make the transition from the military to citizen life less stressful. 11 news reporter, Elmer Mejia Sagastume spoke with lead Behavioral Health clinician of Next Chapter. Elmer, he told you Next Chapter has helped almost 700 veterans, after they get out of the military. Adam, he told me Next Chapter takes pride in providing no cost services to veterans and their families. According to that report released this month by the VA, there were 6,392 veteran suicide deaths in 2021, up more than 400 deaths from the year before.
