11 news reporter Elmer Mejia Sagastume spoke with leaders of different organizations supporting active military members, veterans, and their families. That report says suicide is also the second- leading cause of death among veterans under the age of 45. Here in our community, Mt. Carmel and Next Chapter are working together to help our military members who may be struggling with mental health issues. According to the report by the VA, there were 6,392 veteran suicide deaths in 20-21. Which is up by 114 deaths from the last study released. Mt Carmel’s director of behavioral health, Kristen Belaire, believes in a holistic approach. Which includes mental health and behavioral therapy. The organization also helps veterans transition out of military life to civilian life. Something that can be stressful for veterans and their families who are dealing with mental health issues. Mt. Carmel offers several options to help.
