In 2029, the Southern Colorado county saw on average, one former service member take their own life, get this, every week. That shocking statistics sparked immediate action. In 2022, a one stop shop of sorts, was set up to help veterans navigate everything for mental health care, to food insecurity. It’s a collaboration between UC Health and some non-profits in El Paso county. It’s known as Next Chapter and the effort is making a big difference. To find out more about Next Chapter, I sat down with Damian McCabe, director of Behavioral Health and Military Affairs UC Health and 2019 on average, one former service member took their life every week.
