COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – As wreaths were laid at the graves of fallen heroes across the nation, more than a thousand volunteers participated in an event at Pikes Peak National Cemetery on Saturday.

It’s part of Wreaths Across America, which involves placing wreaths on the graves of service members for the holiday season. In southern Colorado, volunteers placed wreaths on graves in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Pueblo and Pikes Peak National Cemetery.

Participants at Pikes Peak National Cemetery said Colorado Springs is a unique city in the way the community supports service members.

“Colorado Springs is blessed with being a community that has always met each one of those circumstances,” said Damian McCabe, the director of behavioral health at UCHealth. He is also the program director for Next Chapter Veterans Program. “From the beginning of this country all the way through today, Colorado Springs has poured out many individuals that have sought a life of service in the military and then retired here because of the community.”

The event was held by cemetery organizers, Mount Carmel Veterans Service Center, and Next Chapter, but many other organizations participate…
